A “hands-on” museum! Grippers, bales of rubber, coffee-sacks, sampling implements: The Speicherstadtmuseum is located on two floors of a red-brick warehouse that is over a hundred years old (in the authentic surroundings of the dockland warehouse district in the former free-port) where typical goods and tools collected from traditional warehouse companies and business premises of the warehouse district are exhibited. Historical photos and maps/plans illustrate (the social and economic) changes of over a century in this worldwide unique historical monument.
Further topics are: coffee- and tea-trading as well as lighter-boating (supplying the warehouses with goods by transport on (cargo) barges). The engaging and interactive exhibition emphasises the skills and ingenuity of the work of warehousemen. Children can explore the museum by themselves: Kalle, the small householder, wants to show you the Speicherstadtmuseum.

What was the sailor's life from aboard a cargo sailing ship en route to Hong Kong or South America? The simple crew quarters and the surprisingly luxurious officers' quarters as well as a detailed documentation inside the museum ship give you a real impression.
The ship is a three-masted barque, built in 1896 in Bremerhaven. The sailing ship saw the empire, war and peace, was captured by the Portuguese and drove for the English crown. In 1983, the RICKMER RICKMERS was reversed from Lisbon back to Hamburg. The at that time run-down ship is now a landmark and a jewel of the Hamburg harbor.
The RICKMER RICKMERS has a private special: since 2006 it is an official post office of the Deutsche Post. Only the crew and embarked guests may use this post office, but the visitors belong to it! Send your mail from Hamburg necessarily from here.
